26 vehicles collided accordion style on the main highway leading from Las Vegas into Arizona Monday. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the calls for service for multiple traffic accidents on U.S. 93 about two miles north of the Kingman city limits began rolling in at 7:55 a.m.
Agency spokesman Quentin Mehr said the first accident involved a pickup truck and a motorcycle. He said preliminary investigation reveals that southbound drivers blinded by sunlight through their windshields came upon the initial accident, resulting in a chain reaction of eight more accidents along the highway.
Mehr said five people who were hurt were taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for more than an hour as public safety personnel tended to the injured and processed the accident scene.
