The Arizona Department of Transportation has expanded its display of freeway travel times on message boards in Phoenix. Until now, message boards along Valley freeways had been reserved for rush-hour commuters. ADOT is now keeping motorists informed about their travel times seven days a week from 5 a.m.

to 11 p.m. during the week and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the weekend.  According to ADOT, “the goal is to provide drivers with information related to freeway conditions ahead of them. For example, drivers might choose an alternate route to save time. That can have a positive impact on the overall flow of freeway traffic.”  ADOT took the opportunity to test the expanded travel times program for a few days leading up to this year’s Super Bowl in Glendale.  The public response to ADOT’s revised message boards was a big hit.  ADOT implemented the new system this week.
