A fuel tanker carrying diesel fuel went up in flames at the Kingman Airport Industrial Park Thursday, sending a thick, dark plume of smoke high in the desert sky. No one was injured in the incident which drew a 3:30 p.m. response by personnel from the Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District (NACFD).
Airport authority officials said the incident occurred at Muskett Oil, a diesel fuel distribution facility. Fire chief Pat Moore said the tanker was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Moore said crews employed tactics involving application of foam and were challenged by fire and heat as they battled to shut off valves supplying the diesel fuel from the bulk tank to the tanker truck filling station.
“It took approximately one hour to extinguish all of the fire, cool the valves and deem the emergency under control,” Moore said in a press release. “The fire destroyed the tanker and associated tractor trailer, a UTV, a small building and one vehicle.”
Moore said the cause of the accident is under investigation. He said an environmental clean-up would be conducted over night and as long as necessary.
