Lake Havasu Municipal Airport invites the public to their open house featuring “Wings, Wheels and Waves,” March 7, 2015, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The World War II B-25 “Mitchell” will be the aviation headliner, joined this year by the high tech machines of Big Boys Toys. Admission is free. There is a $2 parking charge with proceeds going to the local non-profit Initiative for Growth Foundation. Throughout the day, the emphasis will be honoring Vietnam veterans. The second time around will be bigger and better than the first. Big Boys Toys, a major marquis motorsports street show moving from the city’s Downtown District to the airport will share airport ramp space with what was a high-tech combat air machine of its time, a B-25 “Mitchell,” the bomber that Doolittle’s Raiders made famous with their attack on Japan in World War II. This restored bomber saw combat during the war. “It’s a spectacular way to experience almost any type of transportation you can imagine – airplanes, hot rods, motorcycles, speed boats, pontoon boats, rock crawlers, ultralights, helicopters and more,” a spokesman said. The B-25 is among vintage aircraft preserved by the Commemorative Air Force at Falcon Field in Mesa. It is scheduled to arrive the day before event and will be parked in front of the terminal. There will be a VIP and media flight that afternoon. On Saturday, March 7, visitors can climb inside the warbird for a walk-through – admission is $5 – and it’s an opportunity for photos as well. The “Mitchell” will remain parked all day. On Sunday, March 8, the CAF will offer 30-minute flights for $395 per person. Flight information will be available from aircrew and ground crew the day of the show. Also, sharing the airport ramp will be an AT-6 “Texan” a World War II trainer, vintage cars from local car clubs, a beer garden, and vendors offering plenty of food, aviation and motorsports items and memorabilia. For youngsters, there will be a hands-on opportunity to learn about cockpits and a chance to attend a ground school, thanks to Captain Safetypants. And if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to sit in a plane, there will be a flight simulator to see for yourself. Inside in the smaller venue in the terminal lobby, there will be presentations on the U.S. military academies, the Civil Air Patrol, and on the significance of the Doolittle Raid on its 70th anniversary. Title sponsors for Big Boys Toys are Big O Tires and Mother Road Harley Davidson. Lake Havasu City Municipal Airport is seven miles north of the center of the city at 5600 North Highway 95.
