“Amazing Grace”: Scenes from Sen. John McCain memorial

PHOENIX – More than 15,000 people viewed Sen. John McCain at the Capitol, hundreds lined the route to carrying the casket on its way to a memorial service at North Phoenix Baptist Church. Later Thursday, the senator will be flown to Washington, D.C. for services later this week.

Inside the church

About 1,000 members of the public mingled with dignitaries and elected officials inside North Phoenix Baptist Church Thursday, but all fell silent as a pianist on stage began playing at 9:30 a.m., half an hour before the service was set to begin.

About 30 current and former Congress members sat on the floor-level seats of the church, including House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-CA, and Sen. Jeff Flake, McCain’s Republican colleague in Congress.

Players and staff from Arizona sports teams, including members of the Arizona Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Coyotes, bowed their heads in memory of the senator, an active sports fan and supporter of the state’s teams.

About 15,000 people came to the Arizona State Capitol Wednesday to pay their final respects to McCain as he lie in state at the Capitol rotunda, according to a statement from his family.  

After the service, a motorcade will depart for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport where he will be transported to Washington D.C. McCain will lie in state Friday at the U.S. Capitol.  

Motorcade leaves

People started to gather at North Phoenix Baptist Church Thursday morning on Sen. John McCain’s final day in Arizona.

Memorial Service

Political leaders, professional athletes and family will speak at Sen. John McCain’s memorial service Thursday.

The service will be attended by McCain’s family and friends, and national, state and local political leaders. 1,000 seats were made available to the public.

Cindy McCain, family and the hearse are expected to arrive at North Phoenix Baptist Church at around 9:40 a.m. Cindy McCain will be greeted by Senior Pastor Noe Garcia.

At around 9:55 a.m., the Armed Forces Body Bearer Team will carry McCain’s casket into the Church followed by ceremonial pallbearers and family.

The service is expected to begin at 10 a.m. McCain’s first Congressional Chief of Staff Grant Woods, longtime friend and Latino activist Tommy Espinoza, Cardinals Wide Receiver Larry Fitzgerald and former Vice President Joe Biden will speak.

The service will also include Bible verses read by two of McCain’s children, Bridget and Andrew.
