Protesters decrying police brutality Friday night were loud and spirited, but never violent as they hit the streets of Phoenix’s Biltmore area. Leading the way, the Reverend Jarrett Maupin, as the protesters briefly blocked 24th Street at Camelback to call attention to a 12 point list of demands to

Phoenix Police. Among them, stepping up the purchase of additional police body cameras and increasing diversity training.  Maupin says, a three year wait for additional body cams is unreasonably long.

Maupin says the intersection was deliberately targeted for its location. The intersection is lined by the Biltmore Fashion Square, which caters to the affluent with its upscale shopping and restaurants. The Ritz Carlton Hotel is across the street from there, and businesses include financial firms. Maupin billed the protest as a confrontation “with the affluent and apathetic”.

Unlike the fracas that erupted last Friday night between police and rock throwers, the demonstration was peaceful. The protest wound down amid news Phoenix Police Chief Joe Yahner received the signed demand list.
