An Arizona State K9 Trooper stopped a white Ford pickup, with two occupants inside, on westbound Interstate 10, milepost 294, for displaying a fictitious license plate. The pickup stopped briefly then fled from the trooper.
With the assistance of the Department of Public Safety Southern Air Rescue helicopter, the vehicle was later located abandoned in the desert near the Vail area (east of Tucson). The pickup had been covered with a tarp in an attempt to camouflage it. After an extensive search of the area no suspects were found. Found inside of the pickup was 1,920 pounds of packaged marijuana worth about $960,000
Detectives from the Pima Highway Interdiction Team were called to the scene to conduct the follow up investigation.
