Better Business Bureau’s Mohave County campus continues to be a great resource to consumers and businesses in the community. In 2016, Better Business Bureau Serving Central, Northern and Western Arizona (BBB) received 53,641 inquiries from consumers requesting information about businesses in Mohave County. More than 170 complaints and 275 customer reviews were also submitted to BBB in 2016.“Compared to 2015, inquiries and customer reviews are up while complaints are down,” said Elaine Cullen, BBB Mohave County Director. “It’s great to see business inquiries and customer reviews increase over 22 percent from 2015, while seeing the number of complaints decrease by 17 percent.”
Most Complained About Industries:
1. Incentive Programs: Same as 2015, consumers received cold calls and/or attended seminars promising “free” travel only to end up being charged unexpected fees and taxes that often cost as much as the travel. Requests for refunds took months, if received at all.
BBB Tip: High-pressure sales tactics, one-day or limited-time offers, upfront payment and big savings are all red flags. Beware of companies concealing their identity or providing limited contact information. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
2. Air Conditioning Contractors & Systems: Up from number four last year, some consumers alleged they were misled into purchasing a new unit or paying for unnecessary repairs, while others reported difficulty utilizing warranties when needed.
BBB Tip: As with any major purchase, consider a second opinion and get multiple bids. Read and understand all warranty information; not all system parts may be covered. In many cases, a lack of regular maintenance by a licensed air-conditioning contractor could void a warranty.
3. Auto Repair and Service: Same as 2015, incomplete, delayed and unnecessary repairs were reported by consumers concerning the auto repair and service industry. Some consumers claimed paying in advance for repair work that was not completed, while others stated the repair shop didn’t repair what was promised and refused to fix the problem when consumers brought it to their attention.
BBB Tip: Always obtain a written estimate before authorizing any work, be leery about making payments upfront, and require authorization for additional work on the vehicle. Make sure the estimate includes a description of concerns, what the technician found to be the cause, and the correction or course of action for repair, including total cost. Don’t forget to ask about warranty for parts and labor.
4. Jet Ski/Personal Watercraft: Down from number two in 2015, consumers were charged fees for watercraft damages and/or fuel costs they did not incur. Consumers also reported the price being advertised was different than the amount charged.
BBB Tip: Inspect the watercraft for damages, make note on the rental contract, and take photos before going out on the water. Get copies of all documentation. After use, check credit card statements to ensure the correct, agreed amount was charged.
5. Auto Dealers - New Cars: New to the top-five list, consumers reported feeling misled by sales representatives when purchasing or repairing a new vehicle. When a problem with a purchase contract or a faulty repair job came up, consumers claimed the employees lacked customer service skills and did not make a good faith effort to resolve issues.
BBB Tip: Before making a car purchase or repair, check out the dealership’s reputation at bbb.org. Read the entire contract prior to signing. If servicing a vehicle, get a written estimate that outlines repairs to be done. Retain all paperwork and receipts; you may also ask for old parts to be returned if it helps with peace of mind.

In La Paz County, 11 complaints were submitted in 2016, with the highest number in the trailers - camping & travel industry. BBB also received seven customer reviews in that county and inquiries were close to 4,000.
