booksA veteran residing in Golden Valley is organizing a “Books for Vets Run” and will lead a caravan that will deliver books to the Veterans Hospital in Prescott on July 11. Steve Mitchell said he learned during a personal stay at the hospital that the facility is short on reading materials.“Anybody who has to lay in a bed for a week knows that you can go stir crazy easy,” Mitchell said. He’ s asking area residents to donate books for the hospital.“I’ve been pre-collecting books and I’ve got 20 or 30 boxes of books. They pour in every day. People walk into my shop and they’ll drop off a bag of books,” Mitchell said. “I’m looking specifically for fictional novels. There are a few restrictions. We can accept magazines that are not more than a year old, per the VA requirements. And they must not be anything of a gun or shooting nature. I’m accepting all sorts of fictional novels from westerns to sci-fi to political thrillers.”Mitchell said books are being collected at his Mailboxes & More business at 4195 Highway 68, Suite C, in Golden Valley, Monday through Saturday.

The motorcycle enthusiast will ride his Harley in the lead of a caravan that will deliver the books to Prescott on July 11. He said anyone interested can join the ride that will leave his shop at 9:30 a.m.
