Abandoned Golden Valley home destroyed in afternoon blaze

Saturday afternoon around 12:30 pm Golden Valley Fire responded to a reported fully-involved home fire in the 4300 block of W. Collins Drive.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the abandoned home which was vacated approximately 2008 following the death of the occupant.  The neighbors stated the home has seen vandalism over the past several years, and the property owners have no insurance on the home.  The Golden Valley Fire marshal was notified, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, although officials said it is suspicious since there are no utilities.  Officials advised that all such structures should be secured if possible to discourage unauthorized entry.   PHOTOS/Courtesy GVFD:   First arriving fire units found the home fully-involved and mostly...

Golden Valley Fire appoints new assistant chief

With the departure of GVFD’s Assistant Fire Chief Ted Martin, his replacement Jack Yeager stepped in and hit the ground running on July 23rd.  Chief O’Donohue reported that the Board of Directors authorized a temporary appointment for this leadership position until a full-time replacement could be selected at a later date.  O’Donohue stated that Yeager has been offered this position for 1-year, with a 30-day option for the District to terminate his employment at any time.  O’Donohue continued, we fully expect Jack to pursue the full-time position when that time comes. With several large projects assigned to the Fire Chief by the Board for the remainder of the year, the District needs an assistant chief with a strong background in Operations to continue on the growth path and pace set for the organization.  Assistant Chief Yeager, who has 28-years’ experience in the fire service, will handle all aspects of the Operations Division under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief.   PHOTO (Courtesy / Butch Meriwether): Assistant Chief Jack Yeager   Karen Christensen Administrative Assistant Golden Valley Fire District (928) 565-3479 Email: karen@goldenvalleyfire.org...

Donation makes Golden Valley home safer

Golden Valley Firefighters install smoke alarms in the home of Golden Valley resident Debra Eaton under the newly developed “Robert P. Davies Memorial Residential Fire Safety Program”, budget named after the late Robert Davies.  Debra qualified because she is becoming a guardian to three minors, and safety requirements are mandated by the Arizona Children Association, before the guardianship can take place. Prior to his death, Mr. Davies anonymously gave the Fire District $1,000.00 cash for this fund after being awarded the Carnegie Hero Fund award for his part in the rescue of a woman from a house fire in Golden Valley. Following his death, Robert’s girlfriend Earlene Mahar and his family partnered with the Golden Valley Fire District to make his anonymous donation public and to establish the fund to help those who requested the smoke alarms who needed the financial assistance from the District to purchase and protect their home.   Persons wishing to donate to this perpetual fund are encouraged to call GVFD at 565-3479 or come by the Administrative offices at 3327 N. Mayer Rd.   Left to Right: Engineer Luke Weber, Debra Eaton’s daughter Destinee, FF Robert Cole, Assistant Chief Jack Yeager assist with the installation of three smoke...
