A deli-kitchen fire damaged a Safeway grocery store in Kingman Monday. Fire department personnel responded at 1:20 p.m. to the incident at what’s commonly called the “new Safeway” at 3970 N. Stockton Hill Road. The store was promptly evacuated as a precaution while crews addressed the fire that erupted in one of the commercial ovens at the north end of the building. “It was determined that a fire occurred in a natural gas fuel convection oven which was cooking chicken,” Battalion Chief Bill Johnston said in a news release. “Heavy smoke and fire rolled out of the oven which, in turn, activated a sprinkler head.” Johnston said the sprinkler system is credited with limiting the estimated value of the damage to $25,000. No injuries were reported. “The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time but is believed to be accidental in nature,” Johnston said. He said normal operation of the business was interrupted for about one hour.
