johnson A transient has been arrested for burning two churches in the rural northwest Arizona community of Dolan Springs. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said James Earl Johnson, 78, was located and arrested in Dolan Springs Friday, November 6.

Court records indicated that Johnson sought revenge when he allegedly set fire to the Dolan Springs Baptist Church on Pierce Ferry Road and the Mt. Tipton Community Church on El Dorado Drive on September 26. The Baptist Church was destroyed and the Community Church was heavily damaged.

Arrest warrant paperwork indicated that Johnson had been asked to leave both churches and told others that “hell fire and damnation is going to spit down” on the churches in the hours before they were set on fire. One witness said Johnson took a rock from one of the churches and said it was his “trophy and vengeance.”

Johnson is charged with two counts of arson and two counts of criminal damage.
