The mother of a mentally ill woman fatally shot by police has filed a seven million dollar lawsuit against the City of Phoenix. It involves last summer’s deadly officer shooting of patient Michelle Cusseaux who allegedly charged him with a hammer.
The Reverend Jarrett Maupin says this is clearly a case of excessive force on the Officer’s part, more of a result of not following proper procedures rather than being deliberately heavy-handed against a woman Maupin says was no match physically for the Officer.
Maupin says other factors warranting this lawsuit include the city’s foot dragging on establishing a mental health task force to provide oversight on police situations involving the treatment of the mentally ill.
Maupin says the seven million price tag is punitive enough without pushing Phoenix over the financial cliff.
