Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives responded to a shooting incident late Sunday morning. At about 10:55 a.m., initial calls came into the dispatch center regarding a male subject that entered a house and he was being chased by a homeowner with a weapon in the 10000 block of S Gwen Street.
While deputies were enroute, dispatch received another call about shots fired at the same residence and someone got shot. Mohave Valley Fire Department personnel were staged nearby.
Upon arrival, deputies contacted a male subject sitting on the steps of the porch to the residence. The male subject said that he shot someone. The male subject further said the shot person is inside his residence and he thought he was dead.
Deputies detained the male subject who was identified as Steven Edward Whiting, 58. Deputies seized a weapon that was observed lying on a table on the front porch.
Deputies entered the residence and observed a male subject suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying on the floor in the living room. Medical entered the residence and determined the male subject was deceased.
Investigations determined that Whiting, the resident, was inside his residence when the deceased followed a friend of Whiting’s into the house unannounced. The homeowner and the deceased were acquaintances.
Whiting felt threatened as the deceased was demanding money. Whiting shot the deceased as the deceased was approaching him in an aggressive manner.
This is an ongoing investigation. Autopsy results are pending. The identity of the deceased will be released after next of kin has been notified.
This case will be forwarded to the Mohave County Attorney’s Office for review to determine if any charges will be brought. Whiting is cooperating fully with authorities.
