Thanks to a smoke detector, a family managed to get out of their burning home alive early Sunday morning. Phoenix Fire Captain Ardell Deliz says someone called around 2 a.m., spotting the flames coming from the roof. Arriving

firefighters quickly determined that they could battle the flames on the inside of the house, and after the fire was out, were able to recover belongings from the home.

Three adults, two children and two dogs are safe but have been displaced. And, fortunately, the small house is not a total loss.

Deliz says this incident illustrates how critical it is to have a working smoke detector with operating batteries, otherwise, “this could’ve turned out to be much worse.”

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
