At approximately 9:41 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2015, a fire was reported by multiple 911 callers in the 100 block of Lake Havasu Avenue, advising a large garage under construction was on fire. The first arriving fire company reported a large RV style garage in the framing stage was fully involved and spreading to the adjacent house. Three engine companies, one truck company, and a Battalion Chief responded to the fire initially. The Battalion Chief upgraded the emergency to a second alarm bringing the two remaining engine companies to the scene. The second alarm also brought in off-duty firefighters to man reserve apparatus.
The firefighters were able to gain control of the fire in 45 minutes and saved the two structures on each side of the garage. The closest structure housed the Smart Shopper which was not occupied at the time of the fire, but did receive minor damage to the exterior wall facing the new garage. There were no reported injuries to the firefighters. CERT responded to the fire to assist with Rehab duties for the firefighters. Crews remained on scene an additional three hours conducting salvage operations. Damages to the garage area were estimated at $50,000 and the Smart Shopper building sustained an estimated $15,000 in damage. Firefighters were able to save over $425,000 of property. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
