A woman is hospitalized in serious condition and her son is dead after a man fatally shoots him to protect her. Phoenix Police Sergeant Trent Crump says the mother and son got into an argument Monday morning in a car right outside their home at 51st Avenue and Cactus, and her son then
pulled out a knife, repeatedly stabbing her. Witnesses tried to break it up with no success, and that’s when a neighbor hearing the commotion came out to intervene, armed with a gun.
Crump says after the neighbor made verbal commands to the suspect to stop the attack and couldn’t physically stop him, he opened fire, killing the suspect, who died at the scene.
Crump says, under state law, a third party can legally kill an assailant in order to save someone in danger. Crump says police aren’t recommending any charges but the case will still be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery’s office for review.
