Governor Doug Ducey actually signed this bill several weeks ago. But the Governor chose to symbolically sign legislation for a new mandatory civics test in a ceremony Tuesday at the state Capitol. The bill requires students pass 60 out of 100 questions on civics in order to graduate from high school. The questions are similar to ones on the U.S. Naturalization test.
Ducey, touting the fact Arizona is the first state in the nation to require such testing, points out late night comics like Jay Leno have made Joe Citizen the butt of jokes when they can’t even name who the Vice President is, but ultimately, he says, it ceases to be funny anymore.
People attending the ceremony included Secretary of State Michele Reagan and Schools Superintendent Diane Douglas.
