Ground is broken on a new home for heroes as the fallen firefighters memorial begins taking shape near the state Capitol. The memorial commemorates the loss of 105 firefighters and paramedics in Arizona since 1902. Professional Firefighters of Arizona President Brian Jeffries says, people
visiting this spot, “will know they have a place to mourn, celebrate and remember those that’ve gone in the service of their fellow man”. Jeffries says the groundbreaking is the culmination of a dream that harkens as far back as the 1990’s.
Two Arizona sculptors are creating 10 life size bronze sculptures as part of the memorial, representing everyone from professional to volunteer firefighters, wildland firefighters and paramedics, male and female to reflect the diversity of people dedicated to the profession.
Arizona is only one of nine states lacking a statewide firefighters memorial. The memorial is targeted for completion this October.
