A new controversy is brewing in the Golden Valley Fire District. This time the squabble is with an outside party rather than internal infighting.

Board Chairman Paul Gorham said the cash-strapped district will lose about $120,000 a year because the new company operating the state prison refuses to pay what the previous operator paid. Gorham said the prison contributed to the fire district budget because district personnel would respond to the prison when needed.

Gorham said the corporate office of the new operator, the GEO group, has decided it does not have to honor the previous contractual relationship. Gorham said the District has responded to the prison 13 times this year.

Gorham said the District is trying to work with lawmakers and the Governor’s office to correct the problem. The matter will also be discussed at the fire district board meeting that starts at 6:00 o’clock tonight.
