Mohave County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Victor Steven Empie, 61, of Meadview, Friday (4/8) morning for 1st degree murder and 1st degree attempted murder, felonies. Approximately 5:30 a.m., deputies and detectives responded to a shooting at a residence in the 4000 block of Gladiola Drive. Upon arrival deputies observed a deceased male subject later identified as John Hewett Payne, 66, inside his residence at the doorway. Payne died of an apparent gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Payne and his wife were woken up by a loud noise and being jarred from their bed to later discover that Empie drove his Ford Truck into their RV. Their RV was knocked off of the jacks. As Payne opened his front door, Empie was standing there with a firearm and shot Payne. Empie had an ongoing dispute with his neighbors.
Empie surrendered himself and he provided statements that lead to his arrest. The firearm was seized.
Empie was taken into custody, transported and booked into the Mohave County Jail without incident.
