A bill drawing boundaries on Medical Marijuana cultivation facilities gets preliminary approval in the House Monday. Representative Bob Thorpe’s amendment restricting city zoning powers puts a one thousand foot buffer zone between marijuana facilities and neighborhoods. The barrier between churches and schools would be 13-hundred feet.

Thorpe crafted his legislation after hearing from a Maricopa County homeowner worried  his home value will plummet with a Medical Marijuana cultivation facility moving into his neighborhood. He and  other Phoenix residents who live near 16th Street and Deer Valley Road are angry they didn’t get ample notice of the facility moving into the area and protested the 20 acre facility to no avail.

Thorpe originally called for a 25-hundred foot barrier. Next action for H-B 2056 is a roll call vote in the House.
