It’s probation and a short jail sentence for the former owner and operator of an assisted living facility who was convicted of four counts of the abuse of a vulnerable adult. 46-year-old Crystal LaPlante was found guilty at the end of a bench trial in late April.

Character witnesses, including family members, told Mohave County Superior Court Judge Steve Conn that LaPlante was a kind and compassionate caregiver. Prosecutor Michael Crocker generally agreed that history supports that input, but does not excuse the number of months in 2014 when patients were left in urine and soil soaked conditions for days on end.

Judge Conn noted the distinction between willful and intential mistreatment as opposed to the general neglect he said applied in LaPlante’s case.

Judge Conn ordered LaPlante to serve three year’s probation and perform 500 hours of community work service. He also ordered a two month county jail sentence but gave LaPlante more than a year to get her affairs in order before serving that time.
