It seems an opportunity has been missed to coordinate a smooth and seamless transition in appointing a new Division 3 Mohave County Superior Court judge.
That Judge Conn would be exiting the bench for retirement on June 30 has been known for months, if not years. Yet Court Administrator Kip Anderson said there are strong indications that a successor won’t be ready to take his place when Conn ends his 40-year legal career.
Peter Ptak, a communications representative for Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, identified six applicant finalists for the position in mid-May, but none of them had been contacted or invited to interview for the position as of June 13. Ptak failed to respond to three separate inquiries regarding the process and timetable for Ducey in making his appointment decision.
Meantime, Anderson said local court officials are scrambling to attempt to temporarily establish how Judge Conn’s heavy caseload can be managed, given the possibility that his successor might not take the bench for weeks after Judge Conn retires.
