A criminal investigation is targeting an unidentified Kingman city employee in the Finance Department. City Manager John Dougherty said the employee has been terminated.
The police department said the finance department employee and the city are cooperating with a criminal investigation spearheaded by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security. Police Chief Bob Devries said the probe has nothing to do with terrorism but that he can’t be more specific.
News releases of this nature typically do not occur until the point of the arrest and no arrest is reported. Chief Devries said disclosure in this instance comes as a matter of the city wanting to be transparent.
That an upper tier finance department employee is apparently the target ot the probe could have ballot box blowback if public trust is shaken when the city is putting a primary property tax question up for special election next spring.
