Another championship for the traveling Kingman Senior Softball (KSS) tournament team. KSS won the Western States Championship in Prescott on Sunday, July 24.
KSS won its Saturday seeding games by scores of14-8 and 12-10. In the double elimination tournament, KSS posted 14-6 and 13-12 victories before blowing out the Arizona Heat 19-3 for the championship.
KSS is 27-12 in the calendar year with championships in four of the seven tournaments entered. Three of those titles were nationally sanctioned qualifyers.
Team Captain Bob Posey said the team has come a long way from its first year of struggles. He said a team that once found a way to lose now finds ways to win when the chips are down.
``Somebody makes a play. Somebody gets the base hit,” Posey said. ``And it’s a different player all the time. Frequently it’s a role player rather that comes through in the clutch rather than always the best players winning games.
16 players, supported by another couple dozen family members made the trip as the KSS posse seems to grow each road trip.
``I think that’s the strength of our team, that it’s about community and family. Everybody’s there to support each other. You see it on and off the field,” Posey said. ``It’s not just the guys going to play softball for the weekend. It’s a family event.”
Team manager Dave Hawkins thanked the various sponsors who’ve supported the team during its three year run, including Prescott tournament sponsor Bulldog Alarm and owner Michael Niswonger. KSS will next play in Flagstaff August 13 and 14.
KSS finished second at the world championships at the AA level last fall and will play the event again in Las Vegas this fall at the AAA level.
KSS is also fundraising for a trip to the Tournament of Champions in Florida next February.
