A New Mexico man was cited after leaving his pet unattended in his vehicle while he shopped at a store in Lake Havasu City. Police responded the afternoon of May 28 to a report of a dog left in a 2003 Buick Century.

The officer arriving at the location of the discount store found the vehicle in question and its owner. A police report indicated that 60-year-old Douglas Utegg told the officer that he was in the store only too get ice and that he had left the air conditioner running.

Police said a temperature measurement of 103 degrees in the interior of the vehicle revealed that the AC had not been on. Utegg had allegedly been in the store for about 20 minutes and he left no water for his pet terrier that was panting heavily.

Utegg was cited for animal cruelty.
