On March 1, 2015 at approximately 3:00 a.m., a female reported to police that she was sexually assaulted near the English Village in the Bridgewater Channel area. The female reported that she left a local hotel and walked to the channel area to take photographs. She had no recollection of the events and woke up in the sand near the edge of the water. The victim remembered speaking with a male subject that was wearing a bag over his shoulder and smelled bad due to poor hygiene. The victim also reported that her purse was missing when she awoke.
The female was taken to the HAVEN Family Resource Center for further investigation. The investigation revealed there was evidence of a possible sexual assault. On March 3, 2015 the victim called police and reported that the credit card that was missing from her purse was used at a local business. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau were able to obtain surveillance footage of the suspect using the credit card. Information was received that linked the suspect to a transient camp in the desert area.
On March 4, 2015, Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau and Special Investigations Bureau located 32-year old Benjamin Hoaglin and 28-year old Sara Burbridge in a transient camp in the desert area. Detectives were able to observe contents from the victim’s purse inside the tent and Hoaglin matched the description of the person observed on video surveillance using the stolen credit card. During the investigation, detectives observed items associated with the manufacturing of dangerous drugs such as, muriatic acid, acetone, lighter fluid, foil, glassware, numerous plastic bottles with unknown liquid inside, glassware, and a heating element.
Detectives from the Special Investigations Bureau served a search warrant and located additional items used to manufacture dangerous drugs such as drain cleaner, Heet, and packages of empty Sudafed pills. Also found during the search warrant was a methamphetamine pipe, a small amount of marijuana, and various contents from the victim’s purse. Further questioning and investigation revealed there was probable cause to arrest Hoaglin for sexual assault.
Hoaglin was arrested and charged with sexual assault, possession of chemicals and equipment used to manufacture methamphetamine, manufacture of methamphetamine, identity theft, theft of a credit card, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. Burbridge was charged with possession of chemicals and equipment used to manufacture methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.
Hoaglin is a resident of New York and Burbridge resides in North Carolina. They are both homeless and have been in Lake Havasu City for approximately one week.
Hoaglin was held on a $130,000 bond and Burbridge was held on a $60,000 bond. Both were transferred to the custody of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
