The Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida. The Assembly grants one award for each of three categories: instructional programs and services, planning, governance, and finance, and workforce development. Ten finalists were chosen nationwide for each category. MCC’s was recognized in planning, governance, and finance, which highlighted “programs or activities that have been designed and successfully implemented to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the community college,” the Assembly’s website stated. MCC’s recognition stemmed from the college’s efforts to help students better understand their financial obligations and increase the number of former MCC students who successfully repay their student loans. This, in turn, lowered the college’s Cohort Default Rate on student loans by more than 8 percentage points in three years. “I was proud to have represented Mohave Community College at this national Assembly which honored remarkable colleges and their innovative and successful practices,” said Shannon Sheaff, MCC Director of Financial Aid. “It was outstanding to receive recognition for our efforts to help students understand their financial aid commitments.” For more information about MCC, go to
