Senator John McCain is the latest high profile Republican to criticize Donald Trump for his remarks about a fallen soldier’s family. McCain says Trump’s comments about Khizr Khan and his wife are not representative of the Republican Party’s views.

Khan spoke out against Trump at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia last week, claiming his son, who died at the hands of a suicide bomber in Iraq twelve years ago, wouldn’t have been allowed to come to the U.S. under a Donald Trump presidency. Trump suspected that the speech was written for Khan by Hillary Clinton’s handlers, and called the speech a vicious attack. McCain called on Trump to set an example for the GOP and the nation, and says winning the party’s nomination doesn’t give Trump an “unfettered license to defame…the best among us”.
