A man wielding a steel pipe is dead after Mesa Police opened fire on him. Detective Steve Berry says a couple called police because the man was acting erratically, using the pipe or rod to pry open manhole covers. Arriving officers told the suspect to drop the item, and was tasered when he refused.

However, when the taser’s electric charge automatically stopped after a few seconds, the suspect recovered, got up and continued moving towards officers. Berry says that’s when an officer opened fire on him.

The suspect was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. . Berry says the pipe the man was carrying measured three feet. It’s unknown if the 45 year old suspect was on drugs or alcohol.
