Conflicting information has been swirling since it became known Monday that Mercator Minerals is ceasing production at its Mineral Park copper mine about 12 miles north of Kingman. Some facts could be cleared up next Monday when Steve Lawson, the Human Resources Manager for the mine, speaks during the Mohave County Board of Supervisors meeting. Supervisor Gary Watson said he’s hoping for clarification on issues ranging from the specific number of employees being laid off to more information regarding the shutdown. While various public officials have offered different numbers of displaced workers, there appears to be a concensus that at least 350 employees are being laid off as the mine is put into a “care and maintenance” mode, enabling a resumption of production in the future. High energy costs and dropping precious metal prices are among reasons cited for the shutdown. Mercator Minerals filed for bankruptcy protection for the mining operation last August. An attempt to sell the property fell through and the company is seeking abatement of property taxes over more than a two year period.
