Police have arrested a man for shooting and killing his 29-year-old girlfriend last week in their north Phoenix home.  Phoenix police say 44-year-old Darren Helton has been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, 29-year-old Elizabeth Smith.  Last Friday, shots rang out at their apartment complex off Greenway and

Cave Creek Road around 2:30 in the afternoon.  When police arrived, the woman was found shot to death and Helton was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Police believe Helton attempted to commit suicide after killing his girlfriend.  Helton survived and was treated at a local hospital.  Helton was released from the hospital on Sunday and immediately booked into jail on second degree murder charges.
