A proposed recall of two Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District (NACFD) board members has failed. Those working for a special election seeking the ouster of Chairman Patti Lewis and Board member Vic Riccardi concede they fell far short of the required number of petition signatures by the July 25 deadline.

Chris Simpson said recall advocates encountered general apathy in their signature gathering efforts. He said many people contacted were not eligible to sign recall petitions because they were not registered voters or residents of the district.

Riccardi supporter Rick Veradt launched a rival recall campaign seeking the ouster of NACFD board members Jim Bailey and Mike Collins. Veradt has until October 24 to gather the 892 valid petition signatures required to force a Bailey-Collins recall election.
