A Lake Havasu City man charged with molesting his five-year-old grand daughter has been acquitted at the end of a two day trial in Kingman. The Mohave County Superior Court jury deliberated about 90 minutes before finding Scott William Smith, 48, not guilty on May 10.
Smith had been held at the county jail for about 18 months while awaiting trial and he faced a long prison term if convicted.
Public Defender Robin Puchek said he argued to the jury that the single act of alleged improper touching was merely an instance of Smith attending to a hygiene issue. This was the fifth sex offense trial acquittal for Puchek in as many months.
In an unrelated case, Smith pled guilty in 2007 to sexual abuse for allegedly touching his 14-year-old step-daughter. He served county jail time and probation.
