A Kingman woman who reportedly pointed a shotgun at an officer was shot and killed in the northwest Arizona community Monday. The deceased is identified as Paula Dell Phillips, 35.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s office is conducting an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Trish Carter said the incident occurred about 10:38 p.m. when the unidentified officer was checking on a vehicle stopped on Broadway Avenue, near Stockton Hill Road.
Carter said the officer opened fire when the driver, Phillips, brandished a shotgun and pointed the weapon at him. She said the unidentified officer “fired several shots, striking and killing the female.”
The officer was not injured and Carter said she has no information concerning why the vehicle was pulled over and why Phillips was armed and threatened the policeman.
The officer who has been with the Kingman police department for seven years has been placed on administrative leave, standard procedure in officer-involved shootings in Arizona.
