A Phoenix Police officer opens fire twice on a homicide suspect after the man assaults the officer in a street confrontation Wednesday morning at 16th Street and Van Buren. The officer involved had been responding to numerous 9-1-1 calls of an argument between a man and a woman.
Sergeant Trent Crump says within moments of the officer arriving on scene, the man wielding a large kitchen knife knocked him over, but he got back up and began struggling with the suspect and the woman, who, according to witnesses, was put in a choke hold and had the knife held to her. Crump says the man ignored the officer’s commands to drop the weapon, but stabbed her, and that’s when the officer shot the suspect.
Despite getting wounded, the suspect managed to lunge toward the officer, stabbing him, and the officer once again fired. Crump says the suspect continued fighting until back up officers tased him and took him into custody.
The officer, woman and suspect are all hospitalized. The officer is expected to survive his stab wound. Crump says, the officer didn’t know it at the moment, but police had been seeking this man for a fatal stabbing at an apartment Tuesday night.
