A Phoenix Police officer is in extremely critical condition after a suspect shoots him while responding to a call. Police Chief Joe Yahner (foreground) says the officer was on his way to a burglary- in progress situation at 51st Avenue and Baseline, and upon arrival the suspect opened fire on the

officer. Six more officers returned fire killing the suspect. The victim was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital. Chief Yahner beckoned the community to keep the fallen officer in their thoughts and prayers.

A despondent Yahner, addressing the media, tersely sums up the developments, “This is a bad day for the Phoenix Police Department.” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton called the situation “a terrible tragedy for the City of Phoenix and all the citizens of the City of Phoenix.”

Police had been responding to a call made by the suspect’s parents, who reported their son was trying to steal weapons from their home.

As of Wednesday night, Yahner withheld the name of the wounded officer, but says he’s 35 years old with a wife and two children. This is the third Phoenix Police Officer shot this week.
