The Gilbert couple that owned a kennel where 21 dogs died strikes a plea deal in their animal cruelty case. Jesse and Maleisa Hughes are charged with 21 felonies and seven misdemeanors. All tied to the 21 dogs that died of heat exhaustion, after being crammed into a small room with no air
conditioning running in June 2014 at Green Acre Pet Boarding. The Hughes were not there that day, but the couple’s daughter and son-in-law, Austin and Logan Flake were the caretakers at the time.
The plea deal means no trial. But the Hughes agree to serving 23 days in jail, three years probation, 230 hours of community service, and a written apology to pet owners. (like woman pictured)
Sentencing is scheduled for September ninth.
