On October 23, 2015, at approximately 3:17 p.m. Lake Havasu City Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Chemehuevi Boulevard and Silver Saddle Drive for a reported two-vehicle traffic accident with injuries. Officers arrived on scene and found that a Chevrolet truck struck a Kia Forte at the intersection.
Investigators determined the driver of the 2010 Kia Forte sedan, 62-year-old Jill Gwen, was attempting to make a left turn from Silver Saddle Drive onto Chemehuevi Boulevard when she was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet pick-up truck, driven by 45-year-old Jeffrey Shmitt, which was traveling westbound on Chemehuevi Boulevard. The Kia was struck on the driver’s side door which caused Gwen to be trapped inside the vehicle. Gwen sustained major injuries and was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries. Shmitt was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Both Gwen and Shmitt are residents of Lake Havasu City.
The Lake Havasu City Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team is continuing its investigation of this accident. It has been determined that the driver of the Kia sedan failed to yield the right of way to the Chevrolet truck. At this point, neither alcohol nor speed appears to be a factor in this accident.
