A retired police officer is being hailed a hero for rescuing an elderly woman from her burning home in Ahwatukee Wednesday night.  Fire Captain Ardel Deliz with Phoenix Fire says a retired cop noticed his neighbor’s home go up in flames and broke in to save her.  Deliz says if it wasn’t for the former cop jumping into action

and getting the 86-year-old woman out of her house, “she would have surely perished.”  Deliz says the woman suffered from minor smoke inhalation and was transferred to a nearby hospital as a precaution.  She is expected to be okay.  She did tell firefighters she might left a candle burning which could have sparked the fire.  Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
