Their loved one may be gone, but the family of murdered Flagstaff Police Officer Tyler Stewart is getting a bit of financial relief. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Memorial fund has given a $25,000 dollar check to the family. The late Officer’s father, D-P-S Sergeant Frank Stewart (second from left) accepted the money at M-C-S-O headquarters Wednesday.
Stewart says the $25,000 will certain help from expenses incurred from Tyler’s sudden loss. But Stewart adds, he may also use some of the money to help to fund an award in his son’s name at the police academy he attended.
Officer Stewart was shot and killed December 27th by a gunman during a domestic violence call. The suspect, Bob Smith, committed suicide moments later.
That deadly shooting was captured from the slain Officer’s body camera. Sgt. Stewart says he wishes it never seen light of day, saying the video’s release only opens the deep wounds that are still fresh for the family. While he says the video has no value for him, he won’t discount it as a possible teaching tool for young officers.
