A three-hour stand-off with a Phoenix man threatening to kill himself in gunfire.  Sergeant Vince Lewis says someone called Phoenix police to report a mentally ill man was inside his house with a gun threatening to kill himself.  Lewis says the SWAT team was called in and several attempts were made to contact the

individual.  After a few hours, the man emerged from his house holding a gun and tried to walk away and raised his gun toward the surrounding officers.  Police fired a couple rounds of rubber bullets which were ineffective.  Lewis says an officer viewed the man as “more of a risk” at this point and fired one round which did strike the individual.  The man suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken into custody.  Lewis says the man has a history of mental illness and he will be transferred to a facility for a mental evaluation.
