More than one hundred people gathered Monday night atop Tempe’s “A” mountain to remember Katelyn Conrad, the 21 year old ASU student who died in a rappelling accident near Saguaro Lake last weekend. Katelyn was remembered by her friends as being an enthusiastic climber, athlete, and as an outstanding student and friend.

Investigators say it appears her safety rigging failed as she rappelled at Coon Bluff in the Tonto National Forest. She fell about 150 feet to her death. The biomedical engineering major was the daughter of a longtime Phoenix police lieutenant. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deadly mishap that claimed Katelyn’s life.
