Detectives are on the hunt for a ruthless degenerate who tortured and beat a puppy, leaving it to die.  Sergeant Jaime Rothschild with Silent Witness says the puppy was found near a canal in the 69-hundred block of West Van Buren Street.  The puppy was in a bloody heap placed inside a hand-held purple grocery store

basket, most likely the 99 Cent store.  Rothschild says it was “pretty obvious the puppy had been beaten or attacked as there was a lot of head trauma.”  He went onto say “this was a traumatic case – this head trauma looks like this poor little dog suffered.”  Animal Care and Control tried to save the puppy, but they were too late.  Police are hoping someone will come forward or remember seeing a person walking around with a puppy in a purple carry-on grocery store basket.  Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. A reward up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
