The alleged abuse of a two-year-old girl has led to the arrests of the child’s mother and her boyfriend. Deputy Kingman Police Chief Rusty Cooper said Marcos Castillo, 34, and Monica Valadez, 31, were booked into jail on Tuesday, September 27.

Cooper said the investigation began on September 25 when a social worker at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital reported suspected abuse of the girl that had been flown from a hospital in Parker. Cooper said the suspects drove the injured toddler to Parker for treatment, hoping to avoid law enforcement involvement.

The girl reportedly suffered a severely broken arm, internal injuries and bruising. Cooper said investigators determined the child was possibly in the care of Castillo when the injuries were inflicted.

Castillo and Valadez were charged with child abuse and failure to report and protect. The injured girl and her three year-old sister were removed from the custody of their mother by the Department of Child Safety.
