A northwest Arizona resident died early Wednesday about 12 hours after he was convicted of sexually abusing his granddaughter. A bizarre timeline is associated with the trial and death of Patrick Haslem, 59.

Haslem was present when jury selection began Monday at the Mohave County courthouse in Kingman. Haslem was not present when attorneys began presenting opening statements to the jury at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Judge Billy Sipe directed a probation officer to conduct a welfare check at Haslem’s property which is remotely located between Lake Havasu City and Yucca. Mohave County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Trish Carter said emergency medical personnel were dispatched when Haslem was located with a gunshot to the head, but still breathing.

The critically injured Haslem was rushed to Havasu Regional Medical Center where he died about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The jury found him guilty of four counts of sexual abuse of his teenage granddaughter late Tuesday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s office is treating the death as a suicide.
