The City of Phoenix announces Wednesday who the City’s next Police Chief will be. City Manager Ed Zuercher has chosen Jeri Williams to replace outgoing Phoenix Police Chief Joe Yahner.

Williams, who’s been Chief of the Oxnard, California Police Department since 2011 was chosen in a nationwide search. Williams, a black female, started her career with Phoenix Police as a new recruit back in 1988, and spent 22 years rising up the ranks of the department from Officer to Commander.

Williams will be introduced to the media Thursday at a midday news conference. Her new job starts in October.
