Interstate 17 in the Phoenix area was closed to rush hour commuters Tuesday morning as the result of a wrong way collision. A DPS Officer apparently spotted the vehicle entering the freeway on the Glendale Road off-ramp, and created a traffic break trying to slow traffic down.
Investigators say, however, that the wrong-way driver served around the DPS vehicle, and struck two vehicles head-on in the HOV lane. One of the drivers, a Phoenix Police dispatcher on her way home from work, was critically injured. The wrong-way driver suffered only minor injuries, as did at least one passenger in the car. Authorities are investigating to determine if the wrong-way driver was impaired.
